Flatbed Die Cutting

Flatbed Die Cutting Machine Manufacturer in India

A printed label roll is not finished until the label shape has been cut and the waste around it stripped away. A flatbed die cutting machine does that with a flat steel die that presses down on the web, one stroke at a time. It is the common choice for plain and printed self-adhesive labels, barcode labels and stickers where a flat die is cheaper to make and easier to change than a rotary die.

RK Label Printing Machinery Pvt. Ltd. manufactures flatbed die cutting machines at its head office in GIDC Vatva, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The range on this page has two high speed models with a 300 mm by 400 mm die area and 12000 to 18000 strokes per hour: the RK-3040-S Die Cutting With Sheet Cutting and the RK 3040-D Roll to Roll Die Cutting.

Both share the same core: servo paper pulling, a re-pass scanner for printed labels, a 7 inch touch HMI and online waste matrix rewinding. They differ in how the finished labels come off the machine. This page explains each one and how to choose.

01 — What Is It

What Is a Flatbed Die Cutting Machine?

A flatbed die cutting machine cuts shapes from a moving web using a flat die. The web stops, the die comes down and cuts through the face material of the label, and the web moves forward by one repeat. Because the die is flat, it can be made quickly and cheaply for any shape, which is why flatbed die cutting is popular for short runs and for jobs where the label shape changes often.

On a self-adhesive label, the die cuts through the face stock and adhesive but not through the release liner. The waste around each label, called the matrix, is peeled off and rewound, leaving finished labels on the liner.

Two things make a flatbed die cutter fast and accurate: how precisely the web is pulled forward each stroke, and how well the die lines up with labels that were already printed. RK's machines use an electronic servo motor for paper pulling and a re-pass scanner system to register the die to printed labels.

02 — Range

The RK Flatbed Die Cutting Machine Range

01

Die Cutting With Sheet Cutting

The RK-3040-S is a high speed label die cutting machine with sheet cutting for a 320 mm paper width. It has an auto unwinding unit with a 3 inch air shaft for reels up to 600 mm, controlled by a mechanical brake, and an imported ultrasonic electronic web guide. The die cutting unit is 300 mm wide with a 380 mm repeat length, paper pulling is by a Schneider servo motor, and the re-pass scanner with sliding assembly registers printed labels. A full touch 7 inch Schneider HMI has separate modules for plain and printed label die cutting. Waste matrix is rewound online, an online sheet cutting unit delivers labels as sheets, and the auto rewinding unit with dancer roller feedback delivers rolls. The main motor is 3 HP three phase with AC variable speed control. It suits converters who supply labels both as rolls and as sheets.

Roll to Roll Die Cutting

The RK 3040-D is a high speed label die cutting machine built for efficiently cutting large quantities of web barcode labels or any other label that needs die cutting. It has the same 320 mm paper width, 600 mm reel, 300 mm by 380 mm die cutting unit, Schneider servo paper pulling, re-pass scanner and 7 inch touch HMI, with 3 inch manual shafts on the unwind and rewind and a gauge unit for paper guiding. Waste matrix rewinding is online, tension is controlled by a mechanical clutch with dancer roller feedback, and the 3 HP main motor runs on a Schneider variable frequency drive with a separate 1 HP motor on the unwinding side. The published description highlights smooth operation, minimal maintenance and a user friendly full touch screen. This is the roll to roll model for barcode and plain label production.

03 — Key Features

Key Features of RK Flatbed Die Cutting Machines

300 mm by 400 mm Die Area at 12000 to 18000 Strokes per Hour

Both machines are published at 12000 to 18000 strokes per hour with a die cutting area of 300 mm width and 380 mm repeat length.

Servo Paper Pulling

A Schneider electronic servo motor pulls the web forward by exactly one repeat each stroke, which keeps the cut in register at high speed.

Re-Pass Scanner for Printed Labels

A re-pass scanner system with sliding assembly reads the printed mark and aligns the die to labels that were printed elsewhere.

7 Inch Touch HMI With Plain and Printed Modules

A full touch 7 inch HMI has separate modules for plain and printed label die cutting, selected on the screen.

Online Waste Matrix Rewinding

The waste matrix is rewound online with a mechanical clutch system, so labels leave the machine clean on the liner.

Online Sheet Cutting Option

The RK-3040-S includes an online sheet cutting unit; the RK 3040-D delivers finished labels as rolls.

Dancer Roller Tension Feedback

A dancer roller mechanism with an analog output sensor keeps rewinding tension steady from the start of the roll to the end.

04 — How It Works

How Does a Flatbed Die Cutting Machine Work?

1

The label reel is loaded on the auto unwinding unit, up to 600 mm in diameter. The mechanical brake holds the reel under tension, and the web guide, ultrasonic on the RK-3040-S or a gauge unit on the RK 3040-D, keeps the web running straight into the machine.

2

The servo paper pulling unit advances the web by one repeat and stops. The flat die comes down and cuts the label shape through the face material. For printed labels, the re-pass scanner reads the print mark before each stroke so the die lands exactly on the printed image. The operator selects the plain or printed module on the 7 inch touch screen and sets the repeat, count and speed there.

3

After the die, the waste matrix is peeled away and rewound on the online waste rewinding unit. On the RK 3040-D the finished labels rewind as a roll on the auto rewinding unit. On the RK-3040-S the web can instead pass through the online sheet cutting unit and be delivered as sheets.

05 — Applications

Applications

Barcode labels - the RK 3040-D is described for large quantities of web barcode labels.
Plain self-adhesive labels - blank labels for thermal transfer and thermal printers.
Printed label finishing - die cutting labels printed on flexo, screen or digital presses using the re-pass scanner.
Sheet labels - A4 and custom sheet labels delivered by the online sheet cutting unit.
Stickers and die cut shapes - custom shapes within the 300 mm by 380 mm die area.

06 — Materials

What Materials Can It Run?

The machines are published for self-adhesive label stock up to 320 mm wide on the RK-3040-S and RK 3040-D, from reels up to 600 mm in diameter. Paper and filmic label materials are run within those limits, but the right die, pressure and speed depend on your stock. Send RK a sample. RK runs a trial on the customer's own material before almost every order.
