What Is a Flatbed Printing Machine?

A flatbed printing machine prints with a flat plate instead of a round cylinder. The label web stops, the flat plate presses the image onto it, and the web moves on to the next impression. Each impression is called a stroke, which is why flatbed speed is quoted in strokes per hour rather than metres per minute.

Because the web moves in steps, the same machine can carry a printing station, a lamination station and a die cutting station in a short line, and each one works on the label while the web is stationary. For a label shop this means four colour printing, lamination and die cutting from one machine on a small footprint.

A flatbed label printing machine suits shorter runs and frequent job changes, where a large rotary press would spend more time being set up than printing.

The printing area is 300 mm x 410 mm, the 4 colour printing area 300 mm x 95 mm, the 3 colour printing area 300 mm x 130 mm and the die cut area 300 mm x 250 mm. It runs up to 5000 strokes per hour with a 5 HP three phase AC variable speed main motor, electronic servo motor controlled paper feeding, a repeat pass scanner system, auto unloading and auto rewinding units and a motorised waste rewinding system. The control system is fully digital electronic with auto stop. Extra options are a cross foil unit for stamping and an auto sheet cutting unit.

Double Head Stamping Machine (RK-HSD 3030)

The RK-HSD 3030 is a high speed stamping and label die cutting machine with a double head, for a maximum paper width of 320 mm and a speed of 5000 to 7000 strokes per hour. It has an auto unwinding unit with a 3 inch air shaft and a 600 mm maximum roll, an imported ultrasonic electronic web guide, a re-pass scanner system for printed label die cutting, a 300 mm x 300 mm stamping unit with cross foil saving on across winding by servo (brand Schneider), a die cutting unit of 300 mm width and 400 mm repeat length with servo paper pulling, a full touch 7 inch HMI screen, online waste matrix rewinding, online sheet cutting and an auto rewinding unit.

04 — How It Works

How Does a Flatbed Printing Machine Work?

The label roll is loaded on the unwinding unit. On the RK-HSD 3030 an ultrasonic electronic web guide keeps the web centred as it feeds in. A servo motor pulls the paper forward one repeat at a time.

On the RK-4130/E the web stops under the flat printing plate, which prints the colours in the 300 mm x 410 mm printing area. The web then moves to the lamination system, where a laminate is applied, and on to the die cutting station, where a flat die cuts the label shape in the 300 mm x 250 mm die cut area. The scanner reads the printed repeat so the die lands on the print.

On the RK-HSD 3030 the same stepping web is stamped with foil in the stamping unit and die cut in the die cutting unit. Waste matrix is stripped and rewound online, the sheet cutting unit can cut sheets, and finished rolls wind on the auto rewinding unit. The operator sets everything on the touch screen and the machine stops automatically at the set count.
