What Is a Garment Label Printing Machine?

A garment label printing machine is a small rotary flexo press built for cloth tape rather than paper. The tape, usually taffeta or satin, unwinds from a roll, passes through one or more printing units where a rubber or photopolymer plate on a printing cylinder prints the design, is dried, and rewinds as a printed roll. The printed roll is then cut into individual labels and sewn into garments.

Cloth tape behaves differently from paper. It stretches, it absorbs ink, and it needs the ink to be dried and set so that the print survives washing. That is why the RK GRF 150 uses an IR dryer with digital temperature control and prints from ceramic anilox rollers that meter a controlled film of ink onto the plate.

A wash care label often needs printing on both sides: the brand and size on the front, the care symbols and fibre content on the back. The GRF 150 range has front and back printing units in one pass, so a two sided label does not need a second run through the machine.

The GRF 150 2+1 is the same rotary garment tape label printing machine with two colour front and one colour back printing units. 04 — How It Works

How Does a Garment Label Printing Machine Work?

The operator loads a roll of taffeta or satin tape on the unwind and threads it through the printing units. On the front side units, the ceramic anilox roller picks up ink and transfers a measured film onto the printing plate mounted on the printing cylinder. The plate prints the design onto the tape as it passes between the cylinder and the impression roller.

After the front colours, the web is turned and the back printing units print the reverse side in the same way, one colour on the GRF 150 2+1 and two colours on the GRF 150/4+2. The printed tape passes through the IR dryer, where the digital temperature controller holds the set heat and dries the ink into the fabric.

The finished tape rewinds on the rewind unit. The electronic meter counter counts the length and stops the machine automatically when the set figure is reached. The AC variable speed motor lets the operator set a speed up to 30 m/min to suit the tape, the ink coverage and the drying.
