What Is a Flexo Printing Machine?

A flexographic printing machine prints a moving roll of material, called the web, through a row of printing units, one for each colour. In each unit an anilox roller carries a measured film of ink to a flexible printing plate, the plate prints the image on the web, and a dryer sets the ink before the next colour. After the last colour the web can be laminated, die cut into label shapes and rewound as finished rolls, all in one pass.

The result is a fast, repeatable way to print self-adhesive labels, sleeves, shrink film and similar roll materials. Because the plates are flexible, the same press can print paper, film and foil.

In simple terms, a flexo label printing machine turns a plain roll of label stock into finished, printed and die-cut label rolls, ready for the labelling line.

FMS-3S Series

The FMS-3S Series is a multi-substrate press with triple servo technology, three servo motors in each printing unit. RK describes it for self-adhesive labels, unsupported paper, BOPP, PE, PET shrink film, blister foil and lami tube. It runs at 130 m/min, prints 2-12 colours on 320, 450, 550 or 670 mm web widths, and has a chilled impression drum for a short paper path and stable registration.

The FMS-2S Series uses dual servo technology, two servo motors in each printing unit, with a shortened web path and a chiller roller on every printing unit. Wide Web Hybrid Flexo Printing Machine

Servo Drive Options

04 — How It Works

How Does a Flexo Printing Machine Work?

The roll of label stock is loaded on the unwinding unit. An electronic web guide keeps the web centred and an auto tension controller holds it at a steady tension as it enters the first printing unit.

At each printing unit a ceramic anilox roller meters ink onto the printing plate on the printing cylinder, the plate prints its colour, and the web passes through a UV or hot air dryer before the next unit. On the servo presses each station is driven and registered by its own servo, and on the FMS and FM presses a chilled impression drum keeps the web short and stable between colours.

After the last colour the web goes through the die cutting units, where labels are cut to shape and the waste matrix is stripped and rewound. The finished rolls wind on the rewinding unit under their own tension control. The operator runs the whole press from the touch screen.

The RK flexo range is published for self-adhesive label stock, unsupported paper, BOPP, PE, PET shrink film, blister foil and lami tube, with a substrate range of 12 micron to 200 GSM on the FMS-3S and FMS-2S Series. Anilox rollers and printing cylinders are supplied to your requirement.
